RMS is an active place. Every day the over 400 people in the building engage each other in learning discussions, physical contests (mostly involving Dance Dance Revolution this week), caring conversations, and spirited inquiry about the big questions of the day (many of those questions this week involved Frozen II). Sometimes in the midst of this activity, and especially at this hectic time of year, it is good to slow down and enjoy the small moments of peace the day can bring. Middle school students are often so focused on what is next, what tomorrow will bring, and what it will all mean that they forget to simply breathe and enjoy the day we have. We can all help build a mindful community by taking that time ourselves - whether through pausing to enjoy a sunrise, or a piece of student art, or the beautiful music we heard at the concert on Thursday. I think it is telling that during the concert last night I looked up numerous times to see parents, teachers, custodians, and fellow students just enjoying the performance - finding peace where they could. Community builds itself in times of individual quiet reflection as well as in times of common active experience.
Enjoy the weekend. We have two weeks left before an extended winter break, and I am sure the pace of life will continue to accelerate in the time left in 2019. Please take every opportunity to enjoy the community we continue to build.
