Frances C. Richmond Middle School

Friday, October 2, 2020

Dear RMS Community:

Wow, October arrived quickly!  It is amazing to realize we have been back in person for a month already, and our 1st quarter is almost over.  Whew!  It is not a normal year, and in many ways it has been very difficult, but the geese are resilient.

The next two weeks will both be 4 day weeks for students, with the “fall break” around indigenous people’s day beginning next Friday, with students returning to school on Tuesday, October 13th.  Wednesday this week will see the beginning of our year long equity training as a staff.  At RMS we are committed to welcoming and valuing all voices and experiences in our community and look forward to working together to building on the work we have started with each other.

Please enjoy the weekend.  We do not want to add to the overwhelming amount of news that seems to bombard us every day.

We have added to that news by making our daily announcements visible on schoology, so please feel free to check with schoology what is happening every day.

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Stay safe, be well, take care of each other.

Warmly,

Tim Boyle
Principal

Associate Principal

Remote Academy

News from afar - This week saw the Remote Academy Art classes produce the following:

Fin Artman’s “Dragon in a Deep Dark Cave.”

And Carter Faill's mixed media presentation "Bubbles"

In addition, a Remote Academy teacher revealed a love for a double decker, peanut butter and jelly sandwich with potato chips inside dipped in a ketchup and mustard blend - proving that “strange” food combos persist in Middle School (even among staff).  In addition, in a lesson pertinent to our current political climate, we found trying to build consensus in a game of two truths and a lie is both harder than it seems.  The work, however, proved a nice way to strengthen community.

Materials Needed:

The living arts class is looking for pumpkin donations for an upcoming cooking project.  Please bring any donated pumpkins to the FCS room.  Thank you in advance to families who donate. Please email Ms. Katie with any questions.

We are finding that our new dedication to cleanliness and sanitizing has depleted some of our supplies.  Notably facial tissues.  As we enter cold and flu season we find our supply low.  If you would like to donate a box of tissues to your student’s homeroom, it would be much appreciated.

Sanitizing colored pencils multiple times per day is causing interesting changes in their structural integrity.  Art students please consider purchasing your own set of colored pencils for class.

Walk and Ride to School

The 2020 National Walk & Bike to School Day will be held on Wednesday, October 7th, and RMS will be taking part in this event. Walking or biking to school promotes health and a cleaner environment. Students who normally get a ride to school can still participate by choosing to get dropped off at the Dartmouth Rugby Field and walking from there. Be sure to follow all safety precautions, such as wearing your helmet when biking and following traffic signs. Leave plenty of time to arrive at school on time. This is a rain or shine event so please make safe and responsible decisions in the event of inclement weather. Please adhere to the Hanover mask ordinance and practice safe social distancing protocols when taking part in this event. Email Beth Swartz with any questions.

RMS CAFE

Austin is expanding options daily for snacks and lunch.  The daily menu reflects the specialty entree for the day, but please know there are multiple choices every day, including a variety of breakfast sandwiches, fruit cups, salads, and lunch boxes - in addition to the published a la carte option.  All options are local, fresh, and delicious.

RMS Health Office Updates

We have had many questions about our protocols surrounding students who are sick, both with and without symptoms of the coronavirus.

Many thanks to Abby Pelletier, who has created the following letter outlining the protocols designed to help us take care of each other.

Prescription Medications

Does your child need to take a prescription medication during school hours? Students must keep all prescription medications in the health office and have a signed medication form as well. The medication form and additional information can be found here: Health Office Website
