What inspires you? Often when students are asking "What should I make?" the reply includes the questions of "fun or functional?" and "for yourself or someone else?" Or one will sometimes see a piece of fabric and say "I love this, what can I make from it?" Other times one will have a particular project in mind and seek the fabric that fits. Both approaches fit with the highly individualized nature of the creating with fabrics classroom.
Students are encouraged to create one of a kind project or one just like their best friend next to them. The skills obtained when planning, problem solving and reflecting on completed work transfer to many other situations. The learning about oneself when one takes a chance is an important part of the self discovery encouraged in the RMS elective program. The goal is to give students basic skills and the confidence to try working with fabric at some point in the future.
